The Eisenbahn Trail was a Rails to Trails project, built on the abandoned Fox Valley Railroad right of way. [1] The name "Eisenbahn" is a reference to the trails origins, meaning "iron road." [ 4 ] The railroad was originally constructed in 1871 [ 5 ] by Chicago and North Western Transportation Company .
The abandoned right of way was turned into a recreational trail known as the Hillsboro State Trail [3] [4] or alternatively as the "Hillsboro Spur". [5] The C & NW main line trackage at Union Center is now the 400 State Trail. The junction for the Hillsboro Spur to the 400 State Trail is just outside the southern edge of Union Center. [5]
