All India Radio(AIR), officially known since 1956 as 'Akashvani' is the national public radio broadcaster of India.It was established in 1936. All India Radio is the largest radio network in the world, and one of the largest broadcasting organizations in the world in terms of the number of languages broadcast and the spectrum of socio-economic and cultural diversity it serves.
Activists and community workers from across the country have banded together under the aegis of the Community Radio Forum of India to coordinate training and support for community radio stations, and to work for a more proactive community radio policy. The Community Radio Forum, India, was registered as a Society and Trust on 26 February 2008.

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) opened the airwaves in 2004, as it allowed educational institutions to get licence for community radio paving way many education institutions in India, including Indian Institute of Mass Communication at 96.9 hertz, Jamia at 90.4 hertz, to set up their own community radio stations since 2005 with a radius of 10–15 km. Community Radio Sarang is managed by the Mangalore Jesuit Educational Society (MJES) and is run by St. Aloysius College (Autonomous), Mangalore, a coastal town in the southern part of Karnataka, India. It was established in September 2009 by Dr Richard Rego SJ who is known as the founder of this campus based community radio.
