Walter de Merton, (c. 1205 – 27 October 1277), founder of Merton Henry Savile, Warden from 1585 to 1621, had great influence on the development of the college. Merton College was founded in 1264 by Walter de Merton, Lord Chancellor and Bishop of Rochester. [14]

Sir Martin John Gilbert CBE FRSL (25 October 1936 – 3 February 2015) [1] [2] was a British historian and honorary Fellow of Merton College, Oxford.He was the author of 88 books, including works on Winston Churchill, the 20th century, and Jewish history including the Holocaust.
Brodrick was elected to be a Fellow of Merton College in 1855 and was called to the bar in 1859. He joined the staff of The Times in 1860. At the 1868 and 1874 general elections, Brodrick stood as a Liberal at Woodstock, but was defeated. He was opposed to William Ewart Gladstone's policy on Ireland.
