Last time I researched air cooled standby generators, the Generac engines were Chinese made. It’s been awhile though so perhaps Generac switched production countries for their air cooled V twins (although I have my doubts). For long term ownership for 20 years from now, there’s a very good chance you could still easily get Kohler parts.
The BEEF: If you have gobs of money.. buy a Generator that spins at 1800 rpm. They are double the price of a 3600 rpm generator. They last longer and are built strong. They are liquid cooled and are very quiet. 3600 rpm Home Standby Generators are made for when the power goes out for a couple of hours. 1800 rpm generators will run for days and ...

Portable generators seem to cost around $800, I am not sure what additional expenses come with one? Standby generator was quoted to me at around $7000 by three different electricians, plus there would be some cost associated with propane tank installation (which I am estimating to be between $1000-$2000 including the fuel) So $800 vs $8000...
Honda also makes some amazing stuff - they don’t make standby generators; however, you can daisy chain the eu7000 for 14kw. That being said, it needs to be properly sized. Any generator at 100% load (or more) will run as you describe. 8kw is small, that’s roughly 60amps@120v, whereas the service to the house is probably 200a@240v .

What are the ramifications of being without power? The outage will either be small or large and widespread. In the small outage standby generators are nice, but (for me) was not worth the expense. In a wide-spread outage, the benefits of a generator are limited because of fuel and the access limitation on other services.
Make sure the investment is really worth it. Home standby generators are a larger expense. Often, a smaller portable inverter generator will be more fuel efficient, so much easier to install (you can still install a whole-home transfer switch) and will run the majority of whatever you want to run during an outage.
Standby generators are upscale features and are generally associated with the upper half of the housing stock. I would say that 2,500 sf falls on the low end of the typical house WITH A STANDBY GEN. Average size of homes in the US is about 2x what it is in UK (US is a richer country - per capita GDP of $70k vs $46k in UK).
