Holt is the second most-populated CDP (after Forest Hills) and the fifth largest by area in the state of Michigan. The community is south of Lansing , just south of I-96 between US-127 and M-99 . The city of Mason is about 6 miles (10 km) southeast, and the village of Dimondale is about 6 miles (10 km) west.
Holton was platted in 1871 and named for Henry H. Holt, a Muskegon County delegate to the State Constitutional Convention of 1867 and later Lieutenant Governor of Michigan, 1873–76. He donated the bell to the local Methodist church. A post office was established in February 1872. [8]
