Kyokushin Karate has served as the basis for the Kyokugenryu Karate, a fictional martial art from SNK Playmore's Art of Fighting, Fatal Fury, and King of Fighters series. Kyokugenryu (lit. "the extreme style") and Kyokushin are similar sounding names, and the family patriarch Takuma Sakazaki is modelled after Kyokusin founder Mas Oyama.
Masutatsu Ōyama (大山 倍達, Ōyama Masutatsu, 4 June 1923 [4] – 26 April 1994), more commonly known as Mas Oyama, was a Zainichi Korean karate master who founded Kyokushin Karate, considered the first and most influential style of full contact karate.
Like Priest Geo, he is one of the Five Heroes of Metallicana who fought in the Golem War, attracted by the aspirations of Prince Lars. Later, he became the Seneschal of the Iron Maiden. He is a master of the Kyokushin Itto style and his class is Samurai High Master. Joshua is one of his disciples. His name references Neal Schon and Toshirō Mifune.
Additionally, he is featured in manga and anime adaptations, as well as the 1994 live-action film. Ryu was created by game designer Takashi Nishiyama, who was inspired by the martial artist Mas Oyama while designing the character. For his second appearance, Ryu's design changed from a young fighter to a skilled karate practitioner.
