Bald Mountain, or Rondaxe Mountain, is a part of the Adirondack Mountains in the U.S. state of New York. [2] The trail leading up the mountain is a popular hike, likely due to its proximity to tourist towns (such as Old Forge, NY). The mountain is also home to the Rondaxe Mountain Fire Tower, [3] which contributes to the trail's popularity.
In 1997, local residents, the Forest Fire Lookout Association, and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation began efforts to restore the fire tower and establish access through a network of hiking trails. [4] Along the main trail near the fire tower, a lean-to shelter is available for public use. [2]
The tower was used until 1970, when the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation closed it, as it had become more cost-effective to spot fires using aircraft. The tower was removed in July, 1977. [3] There is a memorial near the summit to hermit Walter Channing Rice, who manned the fire tower from 1915 to 1923. [4]
In late 1933, the Boston Corners CCC Camp built a 79-foot-6-inch-tall (24.23 m) International Derrick E-4898 steel fire lookout tower on the mountain. The tower had been provided to the State by the United States Forest Service. The tower was first staffed in 1935, reporting 91 fires and 610 visitors.
