The Back Bay Restaurant Group was founded in 1992 when it was spun off from Charles Sarkis' Westwood Group and went public at $17 a share. [1] [2] It was listed on the NASDAQ under the symbol "PAPA". [3] At the time Back Bay Restaurant Group went public it had 14 restaurants.
Back Bay is an officially recognized neighborhood of Boston, Massachusetts, [2] built on reclaimed land in the Charles River basin. Construction began in 1859, as the demand for luxury housing exceeded the availability in the city at the time, and the area was fully built by around 1900. [3]
Samuel Longley Bickford (1885–1959) began his restaurant career in 1902. In the 1910s, he was a vice president at the Waldorf System lunchroom chain in New England and, in 1921, he established his own quick-lunch Bickford's restaurants in New York.
In 1964, Sarkis purchased Boraschi's restaurant in Boston. [1] In 1968, he opened his second restaurant, Charley's, on Newbury Street.In 1992 he spun off his restaurant business into the Back Bay Restaurant Group, which went public at $17 a share.
L’Espalier was a French restaurant located in Boston, Massachusetts, in the Back Bay neighborhood, adjacent to the Mandarin Oriental Hotel. The chef and owner of L'Espalier was Frank McClelland, who received a James Beard Foundation Award in 2007 for Best Northeast Chef. [1]
