James Andrews (1801–1876) was an English draughtsman, botanical painter and illustrator noted for his accomplished illustrations. [ 1 ] [ 2 ] He also taught flower-painting to young ladies. He created the illustrations for the famous nature writer Sarah Bowdich Lee 's 1854 book Trees, Plants, and Flowers: Their Beauties, Uses, and Influences .
The American Society of Botanical Artists (ASBA) is the principal United States society for those who practice and appreciate contemporary botanical art.Since its founding by Diane Bouchier in 1994, ASBA has grown to nearly 2000 individual members in 39 countries and more than 40 institutional members from around the world.
Elizabeth Twining was born in 1805 into the Twinings tea-merchant family. She was one of the nine children of Elizabeth Mary (née Smythies) and Richard Twining. [2] She was raised in London, where she learned art and drawing as part of her education, during which she was inspired by Curtis's The Botanical Magazine and the gardens of the Royal Horticultural Society at Chiswick.
