Miriam Tlali was the first black woman to publish a novel in South Africa with Muriel at Metropolitan (1975) (also known as Between Two Worlds). John Maxwell (J. M.) Coetzee was also first published in the 1970s.
African literature is literature from Africa, either oral ("orature") or written in African and Afro-Asiatic languages.
