According to the 2002 account, the plate was intended to be a joke among members of a playful fraternity of California history enthusiasts, the Ancient and Honorable Order of E Clampus Vitus ("ECV"). However, Bolton was in league with this group, and they were to take the blame if the plate was found to be a forgery.
