The Independent Eye was an underground newspaper, founded in Yellow Springs, Ohio in February, 1968 by Alex Varrone with help from Jennifer Koster Varrone, his wife. The main purpose of the newspaper was to oppose the Vietnam war. [ 1 ]
Anthony M. Grosso was born December 9, 1913. A native of Pittsburgh's Hill District , beginning in 1938, he was involved in running an illegal daily lottery in the area. [ 2 ] At its peak in the late 1960s, his business employed an estimated 5,000 people and grossed $30 million a year.
The original eye hospital was perhaps formed by Dr. Daniel Drake, who received a charter from the Ohio General Assembly for a medical school in 1819 and, in 1821, a charter for the city infirmary called the Commercial Hospital and Lunatic Asylum of the State of Ohio.
Grosso, his partner Eddie Egan, and other NYPD detectives broke up an organized crime ring in 1961 and seized 112 pounds of heroin, a record amount at the time. [1] The investigation was the subject of a book by Robin Moore and subsequent Academy Award-winning film, The French Connection, which won Oscars for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Film Editing, and Best Writing in 1971.
