St. Mary's on the Flats, originally known as the Church of Our Lady of the Lake, [1]: 34–35 [2]: 8 was the first Catholic church building in Cleveland, Ohio.The location where the church once stood can be found, in an 1881 atlas, [3] at the south-east corner of Columbus Ave. and then Girard Ave. on the east bank of the Cuyahoga river in the flats.
Another 3 properties were once listed but have been removed. Of the sites on the National Register in Columbus, 54 are also on the Columbus Register of Historic Properties , the city's list of local landmarks.
The church reopened for worship on April 19, 2019, for the Palm Sunday Vigil Mass. [11] Following these renovations, the church was chosen as the best religious wedding venue in the city of Columbus by the readers of Columbus Monthly in 2022. [12] It also served as a performance venue for Central Ohio chamber orchestra ProMusica Columbus. [13]
In 1820, the church was formally incorporated in the State of Ohio; the first building was on East Sixth Street. In 1835, the church moved to its present location at 318 East Fourth Street. The red-brick structure of 1835 was modeled after the old Stepney church St. Dunstan's in London. [3]
The cathedral c. 1900-10. St. Joseph Parish, named after Saint Joseph, was founded by members of St. Patrick's Parish in Columbus in 1866 to alleviate overcrowding. Its pastor, the Rev. Edward M. Fitzgerald, began to plan for the church, raised money, formed a building committee and secured property on Broad Street and Fifth for $13,500. [1]

In 1856, Fr. Casper Borgess, the pastor of the church, brought Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur from Cincinnati to teach, the first religious women to teach in the city. [7] The Sisters of Notre Dame left in 1961 after the closure of the school making their tenure at Holy Cross the longest in the community's history in the United States. [ 11 ]
