Halton Borough Council is the local authority for Halton, a local government district with borough status in the ceremonial county of Cheshire, England. Since 1998 the council has been a unitary authority , being a district council which also performs the functions of a county council .
Wharton was first elected to Halton Borough Council in 2002 for the ward of Hale Village. Halton Borough Council is a unitary authority responsible for most local government functions within the area. The Labour Party has controlled the council since it was created in 1974. [12] On 1 April 2014, Halton became one of the six constituent local government districts of the Liverpool City Region governed by the Combined Authority. [13]
Its area includes the City of Liverpool local authority area, the Metropolitan Boroughs of Knowsley, St Helens, Sefton, and Wirral, and the Borough of Halton. It was established on 1 April 2014 by statutory instrument under the provisions of the Local Democracy, Economic Development and Construction Act 2009 .
Following local government re-organisation in 1974, the building became the meeting place for Halton Borough Council. [13] In April 2015, the Duke of Gloucester visited the town hall as part of celebrations for the 1,100th anniversary of the town.
