Yesterday I had the pleasure of attending the party at Buffalo Trace celebrating the return of E H Taylor, Jr. to the distillery he founded in 1870. As alaways, Buffalo Trace put together an excellent event. I arrived at about 3:45 and immediately ran into Jo Kitzmiller, who I have not seen for several years.

Anyway, I have a very limited rare Buffalo Trace Bottle from the 5th millionth barrel that I purchased at a Olympic Fundraiser silent auction in the early 90's, here in Louisville, KY. The likes of Mark Spitz and other Olympic heros were on hand.

I must admit that I have liked every expression of Eagle Rare that I have ever sampled. I rave about the 17 year old Eagle Rare ultra-small batch bottling in Buffalo Trace's Antique Collection. Every sip brings me closer to heaven. Until recently I had not had pleasure to sample the now discontinued, but once standard 10 year old Eagle Rare 101 ...

That's a pretty convincing case for Buffalo Trace. Interestingly, the regular Benchmark sold at that time was also from Benchmark Distilling Co., but only "bottled by", and the location of origin was New Orleans (as was Eagle Rare's Prentice Distillery after it was no longer made by Seagram's).

I bought a pint of 100 proof OGD Bonded, and I'm sure glad I didn't buy a bigger bottle. This stuff is awful, harsh rough and the flavor is industrial chemical like.

    A. Smith Bowman is owned by Sazerac. The whiskey is distilled at Buffalo Trace in Frankfort. The new make is sent to Virginia where it is distilled a third time and entered into barrels. Aging and bottling is done in Virginia. These products were introduced last fall and replace the long-time Virginia Gentleman brand.

Today, I was fortunate to be offered a 375 ml bottle of Buffalo Trace Experimental Collection Bourbon. This particular expression was distilled on 5-12 1993, and barreled on 5-13-93. Unfortunately, there is little other specific information, and none on recipe, still proof, entry proof, or barrel proof.
