    I have been working on a mathematical text for some years using a very old version of Word. In that version I was able to open an Equation Editor and enter multiple lines of math equations in a the editor, pressing return at the end of each line to move to the next line.

    It does not appear to be possible in Word 365 to insert an equation with a Matrix that has a different size larger than 3x3.     I am aware of the ALT+= keyboard shortcut to get to equation editor mode. I also know of the CTRL+=, CTRL+SHIFT+= shortcuts to toggle superscript/subscript modeoutside of equation editor. When in equation editor, those shortcuts do not work, and instead I have to click on the Script button from the ribbon.
