The university was founded by incorporating the Traditional Chinese Medicine College of Xinjiang Medical University with the Xinjiang Medical College. Before incorporation, Xinjiang Medical College was amongst 156 key projects aided by the former Soviet Union during the First Five-Year Plan and began recruiting new students in 1956. [ 2 ]

On May 31, 1985, the State Education Commission sanctioned the amount for the construction of the college building. In 1986, a new hospital building's construction started for the "under construction" college. On April 17, 1987, the Xinjiang government merged the college under the administration of the Xinjiang Medical University. [2]
The total construction area is 182,500 m 2, of which 106,500 m 2 is having medical care structures, teaching area is 17,000 m 2, the research area is 12,700 m 2; approximately 44% area is covered by grass and parks. Xinjiang University (XJU) is a provincial public comprehensive university in Ürümqi, Xinjiang, China. It is a national key university affiliated with the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region and co-funded by the Ministry of Education and the regional government. The university is part of Project 211 and the Double First-Class Construction.
