The Edith Farnsworth House, formerly the Farnsworth House, [6] is a historical house designed and constructed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe between 1945 and 1951. The house was constructed as a one-room weekend retreat in a rural setting in Plano, Illinois, about 60 miles (96 km) southwest of Chicago's downtown.
The hall was also partially closed for a brief time during the depth of the Depression [8] during which the family resided in the farmhouse on the property. Covering 88,000 square feet (8,200 m 2 ) and with 110 rooms, [ 3 ] [ 4 ] the mansion is the fourth largest historic house museum in the United States. [ 5 ]

The Middle German house first emerged in the Middle Ages as a type of farmhouse built either using timber framing or stone. It is an 'all-in-one' house (Einhaus) with living quarters and livestock stalls under one roof. This rural type of farmstead still forms part of the scene in many villages in the central and southern areas of Germany.
