The action takes place mostly on the remote and weather-beaten Isle of Lewis off the coast of northern Scotland. The protagonist, Detective Inspector Finlay Macleod (known as Fin), a native of the island, is sent from his Edinburgh police station to investigate the murder of a man who, it transpires, was the bully at Fin's school.
Lewis is a sergeant on the staff of the Thames Valley Police in Oxford, England, and in Inspector Morse is assistant to the eponymous Detective Chief Inspector Morse. Although Lewis's given name is Robert (Robbie), he is rarely referred to as anything but "Sergeant Lewis" or "Lewis". In the novels Lewis is Welsh; in the TV series he is Geordie.
Hathaway, like Inspector Morse, Lewis' old boss from his days as a Detective Sergeant, is cerebral. Unlike Morse, Hathaway trained in Theology , and was a rather successful athlete, as his nickname 'Atta-way Hathaway' (revealed by a rival coach at Oxford) would attest, being a rowing star while at Cambridge. The announcer reading the end credits attributes the authorship of the original book to Colin Dempster. [3] In 1984, a BBC Radio 4 adaptation was released that was dramatised by Melvyn Jones and directed by Brian Miller. [4] The radio play featured Andrew Burt as Inspector Morse and Christopher Douglas as Sergeant Lewis.
Lewis is a British television detective drama produced for ITV, first airing in 2006 then 2007 (series 1). It is a spin-off from Inspector Morse and, like that series, it is set in Oxford . Kevin Whately reprises his character Robert "Robbie" Lewis , who was Morse's sergeant in the original series.
