Donald James Ross (November 23, 1872 – April 26, 1948) [1] was a professional golfer and golf course designer. Ross was born and raised in Scotland but moved to the United States as a young man. Ross designed dozens of courses across North America and is generally regarded as one of the top golf course designers of all time.
The course was designed by Donald J. Ross beginning in 1912 and opened for play in 1916. Constructed on the highest point of the County it was aptly named Hillcrest. This championship layout measures 6,763 yards and has played host to a number of large tournaments over the years.
Klein is the author of seven golf architecture books, including Rough Meditations (1997), [6] Discovering Donald Ross (2001), [7] and Wide Open Fairways (2013). [8]He won the USGA International Book Award for his work on Discovering Donald Ross. [1]

The golf course at Rolling Rock Club in Laughlintown, Pennsylvania, was designed by Donald Ross and was built as a nine-hole course in 1917. The club opened nine new holes, designed by Brian Silva, in May 1997. The course totals 6,176 yards from the back tees. [2]
