[2] The identification of this molecule at high abundances in Neoproterozoic rocks has been interpreted to reflect the presence of multicellular life prior to the rapid diversification and radiation of life during the Cambrian explosion.
Cholestene has been used as a dietary supplement and is often sold with red yeast rice to promote cholesterol management. However, these products contain a hidden drug ingredient, lovastatin, that may cause serious side effects when combined with other medications, such as muscle injury. [4]
The systematic name of this enzyme class is 5beta-cholestane-3alpha,7alpha-diol,NADPH:oxygen oxidoreductase (12alpha-hydroxylating). Other names in common use include 5beta-cholestane-3alpha,7alpha-diol 12alpha-monooxygenase, sterol 12alpha-hydroxylase (ambiguous), CYP8B1, and cytochrome P450 8B1.
