Rae Kushner was born in 1923 to a Jewish family in Novogrudok (then part of the Second Polish Republic). Her father, a furrier , owned two stores and the family lived comfortably. Due to rising anti-Semitism , the family tried to obtain a travel visa allowing them to leave Poland, but were unable to secure one before the beginning of World War II .
