This competition started in 1922 with teams from Horsham Seconds, Jung, Natimuk, Quantong and Toolondo. Prior to the merger the Central Wimmera consisted of Balmoral, Douglas-Miga Lake, Goroke, Horsham Football Club Seconds, Natimuk and Noradjuha. A majority of these teams were based west of Horsham, Victoria.

Apsley had a football club that competed in the Kowree Naracoorte Football League from 1937. Later this would become the Kowree Naracoorte Tatiara Football League where Apsley competed until 1998, when they merged with Edenhope. Since 2007 Edenhope Apsley have played in the Horsham & District Football League.
