In 1956, Maharaja Birendra Bahadur Singh and maharani Padmavati Devi, the then King and Queen of the princely state of Khairagarh, donated their palace to open a university of music, dance and visual arts. [2] The university was named after their deceased daughter, Indira Devi, who died young and had been both fond of and accomplished in music. [2]

Pt. Ravishankar Shukla University, Raipur, was established in 1964. It is named after Pt.Ravishankar Shukla, the first chief minister of Madhya Pradesh. [3] The university came into being on May 1 and was functional from June 1, 1964 with 46 affiliated colleges, five university teaching departments (UTDs) and 34,000 students.
In early 2005 the State Government of Chhattisgarh decided to establish the university with the aim of providing "systematic, efficient and quality education" in the fields of engineering and technology. The relevant act was passed in the Chhattisgarh state assembly on 21 January 2005.
In 1987, college was transferred under Indira Gandhi Krishi Vishwavidyalaya, Raipur. In the year 1989, Government of Madhya Pradesh Dairy Plant situated in Raipur was handed over to Indira Gandhi Krishi Vishwavidyalaya for establishment of this College. Since 2012, it is a constituent college of Chhattisgarh Kamdhenu Vishwavidyalaya. [2]
