Lowndes County is a county on the eastern border of the U.S. state of Mississippi. As of the 2020 United States Census, the population was 58,879. [1] Its county seat is Columbus. [2] The county is named for U.S. Congressman William Jones Lowndes. [3] Lowndes County comprises the Columbus, MS Micropolitan Statistical Area. [4]

The Golden Triangle (GTR) is a region in the east central portion of the U.S. state of Mississippi.The "triangle" is formed by the cities of Columbus, Starkville, and West Point but the region is often more broadly-defined to include all of Clay, Lowndes, and Oktibbeha counties and sometimes additional surrounding communities and counties as well. In 2012, part of the campus was re-opened as the R. E. Hunt Museum & Cultural Center. [5] The museum is housed in the former Fine Arts Building. [6] In 2018, the Mississippi Department of Archives and History created controversy by declaring Lee High School, the white school, a Historic Landmark, but not granting the same status to Hunt. [7]
