The chief reveals that Iroh lied about killing the dragons and instead learnt the knowledge from Ran and Shaw and let them live. Zuko realizes he was relying on anger, rage and the will to capture Aang to be his "inner fire", but instead decides to draw from the true source, his desire to bring balance to the world.
Aang and Zuko travel to Sun Warriors' ruins, where Zuko reveals that Sozin began the tradition of hunting dragons for glory to the point of extinction, with the last dragon being conquered by Iroh. After being caught in a trap, Aang and Zuko discover the Sun Warriors still exist.

Alongside the letter, Iroh gifts Zuko an Earth Kingdom knife and Zuko's sister Azula an Earth Kingdom doll, which she sets ablaze. Azula points out to Zuko and Ursa that if Iroh dies, their father Ozai will become Firelord. The next morning, Ursa tells the two children that Iroh's son, Lu Ten, did not survive the siege.
However, Iroh convinces Zuko to abandon his quest and let Appa go. Azula infiltrates the city to stage a coup and arranges a trap for Zuko and Iroh. Imprisoned together with Aang's friend Katara, Zuko is rescued alongside her by Aang and Iroh, only to be convinced by Azula to betray Iroh, Katara and the Avatar and finally regain his honor.
