However, the earliest Rizal might have first encountered the word was 1882, when he was 21 years old – 13 years after he supposedly wrote the poem. Rizal first came across kalayaan (or as it was spelled during the Spanish period, kalayahan), through a Tagalog translation by Marcelo H. del Pilar of Rizal's own essay "El Amor Patrio". [5] [10]
The poem was presented in 1879 in Manila at a literary contest held in the Liceo Artistico Literario de Manila (Manila Lyceum of Art and Literature), [4] a society of literary men and artists, where he won the first prize, composed of a feather-shaped silver pen [2] [4] and a diploma.
In one account detailing Rizal's 1887 visit to Prague, Maximo Viola wrote that Rizal had succumbed to a 'lady of the camellias'. Viola, a friend of Rizal's and an early financier of Noli Me Tángere , was alluding to Dumas 's 1848 novel, La dame aux camelias , about a man who fell in love with a courtesan .
The origin of the story can be traced to the Ilocano, [3] which is linked to Indian arts. [4] The Ilocano version of the story offers an explanation on why monkeys don't eat meat. Versions of the story have a common theme of a weaker but cunning character (the tortoise or turtle) winning over a stronger adversary (the monkey). [3]
Leonor Rivera and Rizal first met in Manila when Rivera was only 14 years old. When Rizal left for Europe on May 3, 1882, Rivera was 15 years of age. Their ensuing correspondence began when Rizal left a poem for Rivera saying farewell, and their letters to each other slowly became romantic in nature.
