I have never used anything but tap water to rinse or clean it, it never had a smell or taste. I rinse it with tap water, air dry without the cover, and store with the cover on once it's dry.

The bottles also fit better in most backpack side pockets which are often made big enough to "fit a standard nalgene-type bottle." You can even put them in some cup racks in automobiles. The canteen works better if you carry it on your belt. Also, the cup is bigger and probably better to cook in.

After receiving confirmation it is the bottle: Fill about 2/3 full with hot water, drop a dishwasher detergent capsule (Finish Powerball is what my wife buys, so I use those), shake until it is dissolved, top off with hot water and let it sit overnight. Risen well. If that doesn’t work, time for new Nalgenes.

Nalgene bottles have a large opening making them easier to fill. The same wide mouth does make it harder to prefilter. MSR Sweetwater (IIRC) filter makes a system to support the 1 QT Nalgene. With a couple of parts obtained at the local REI, a Nalgene bottle can be pressed into service as a water 'bladder'. The GSI Glacier cup is a good fit.

Nalgene's 1 liter bottles have never leaked on me in the years I've used them and didn't Saturday night. It wasn't that cold outside @ 40 degrees but I wanted to try and be extra toasty. Extra toasty happened. I didnt even bring the water to a full boil like people recommend. the water in the bottle was about 160 degrees.

I prefer single wall stainless steel water bottles. Nalgene bottles have been my favorite. I prefer the stability of their straight walled 38oz over the narrow based 32oz but both work well. I like Pathfinder 64oz bottles also but they are made from thinner material than the Nalgene. The capacity of the larger bottle is nice in warm weather.

The Klean Kanteen bottles are (relative same capacity size) are lighter than the Nalgene bottle. If I was planning on doing more boiling over the fire, I would go with the heavier Nalgene. If I was looking for a lighter backpacking water bottle that could occasionally be used to boil water, I would go with the (wide mount) KK.

The total weight came in at 15.5 oz. That is only 3.4 oz. more than the a Stainless Nalgene alone. Couple of other observations-. The O-Ring on the Vargo Bot seems like a run of the mill silicone O-Ring. Nothing special, it would be nice to see if there is a replacement available.
