Pope unsuccessfully fought Ribble Valley at the election of 1987, placing third, before gaining Hyndburn from the Conservative Ken Hargreaves in April 1992. Considered a Blairite, [1] Pope is a signatory of the Henry Jackson Society. He was a member of the backbench committee on Northern Ireland from 1997 to 2001.
Elections to Hyndburn Borough Council were held on 4 May 2006. One third of the council was up for election and the Conservative party stayed in overall control of the council.
