Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome. Specialty. Gynecology. Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) is a medical condition that can occur in some women who take fertility medication to stimulate egg growth, and in other women in sporadic cases. Most cases are mild, but rarely the condition is severe and can lead to serious illness or even death.
In ovarian hyperstimulation combined with IUI, women aged 38–39 years appear to have reasonable success during the first two cycles, with an overall live birth rate of 6.1% per cycle. [12] However, for women aged ≥40 years, the overall live birth rate is 2.0% per cycle, and there appears to be no benefit after a single cycle of COH/IUI. [12]
Before ovulation there is a surge of luteinizing hormone (LH) which can be used to time an IUI procedure. Data suggest that IUI should be performed 1 day after the detection of the LH surge. [27] Most clinics in the U.S. perform IUI in the morning after a positive ovulation predictor kit test (which detects LH in urine). [27]
