Calibers fall into four general categories by size: miniature-bore historically refers to calibers with a diameter of 0.22 inches (5.6 mm) or smaller; small-bore refers to calibers with a diameter of 0.32 inches (8.1 mm) or smaller; medium-bore refers to calibers with a diameter of 0.33 inches (8.4 mm) to 0.39 inches (9.9 mm)
Sizes that may interchange, depending on the precision needed, include 2 mm (close to 5 ⁄ 64 inch (1.98 mm)), 4 mm (close to 5 ⁄ 32 inch (3.97 mm)) and 8 mm (close to 5 ⁄ 16 inch (7.94 mm)). In reality, a wrench with a width across the flats of exactly 15 mm would fit too tightly to use on a bolt with a width across the flats of 15 mm.
For both of these rules of thumb (85%/90% and major minus pitch), the tap drill size yielded is not necessarily the only possible one, but it is a good one for general use. The 85% and 90% rules works best in the range of 1 ⁄ 4 –1 in (6.4–25.4 mm), the sizes most important on many shop floors. Some sizes outside that range have different ...
Metric drill bit sizes. Metric drill set, 1.0–6.0 mm by 0.1 mm, jobber length. The case that holds them in an indexed order (by size), via a graduated series of holes, is called a drill index. Metric drill bit sizes define the diameter of the bit in terms of standard metric lengths. Standards organizations define sets of sizes that are ...
