Lake Hartwell State Park, formerly known as Lake Hartwell State Recreation Area, is a park located in Oconee County, South Carolina, near the community of Fair Play. [1] The park was created in 1976, the majority on land leased from the United States Army Corps of Engineers with a small portion of land purchased from various private owners.
This recreation area is used by the community for swimming, boating, water skiing and water sports in general, and fishing on Lake Hartwell, and for hiking and biking on a 1.5 miles (2.4 km) trail. Hart Park also offers a playground for children and a self-registration campground, which is opened seasonally from March 15 until September 15.
Camping: there are 9 campgrounds at Lake Hartwell with a total of 524 campsites. [12] Trails: a 7.6 miles (12.2 km) trail is in the Paynes Creek Campground area. The park is at the northern end of the roughly 10-mile long Historic Tugaloo River Corridor, which extends downriver to the upper reaches of Lake Hartwell. Sites marked along this corridor include early frontier and antebellum properties, in addition to Cherokee sites. It reaches to the former site of Tugaloo mound and village. [15]

The CDP is in southern Oconee County, on the northeast shores of Lake Hartwell, a reservoir on the Tugaloo and Savannah rivers. It is bordered to the northeast by the community of South Union . The center of the reservoir is the Georgia state line.
