Mary Jones, famous for walking to Bala at the age of sixteen to buy a Bible, lived in the village when older, and was buried in the village after her death in 1864. The station opened in February 1867, [3] four months after the start of passenger services on the railway. Llechwedd slate quarry has two hydro electric plants, the first opened in April 1904 at Pant yr Afon, and the second at Maenofferen in 1911. They both generate power today having been shut down in 1998 and equipped with new generators reopening in 2010, with surplus now going to the national grid.
