New Inn (Main Hotel) (1911-1912) The main hotel is a 3 + 1 ⁄ 2-story structure with a gambrel roof, fronted by a two-story portico with Tuscan columns. Casino/Dance Pavilion (1908) The casino is a rectangular, one-and-one-half-story structure with a high, gable roof surrounded by verandas.
The structure was completed in 1835, and Mann opened the inn by hosting a formal ball on January 1, 1836. Mann leased the inn to another proprietor in 1837, but it continued to prosper as a stop on the Territorial Road to Detroit. By 1837 it was one of three taverns in Marshall, and by 1877 it was one of eight hotels in the area.
This area was first settled in 1844 by Vermont natives Alfred and Mary Ames, who purchased property that included the present site of the Lakeside Inn. A small settlement was established nearby in 1846; when the Chicago and Michigan Lake Shore Railroad was constructed in the late 1870s, a station was built at the site, then called Lakeside.
