Southside, or South Jacksonville, is, along with Northside, Westside, and Arlington, one of the larger sections of Jacksonville. Originally the name "South Jacksonville" applied to the area to the south of Downtown across the St. Johns River, a neighborhood now typically called San Marco. Mayo Clinic opened an outpatient facility in Jacksonville in 1985, then bought St. Luke's in 1987 [9] to serve as a tertiary referral hospital primarily to attract difficult and complex cases, which was Mayo's specialty. St. Luke's became an affiliate of Mayo Clinic and the admitting hospital for Mayo Clinic Jacksonville patients.
To emphasize the city's transportation capabilities, the Jacksonville Regional Chamber of Commerce filed "Jacksonville America's Logistics Center" as a trademark on November 9, 2007. It was formally registered on August 4, 2009. [ 5 ]
