The white-spotted slimy salamander (Plethodon cylindraceus) is a species of salamander in the family Plethodontidae endemic to the Eastern United States.It is one of 55 species in the genus Plethodon, and was one of the first to be described of its cogeners. [1]
The Plethodon glutinosus group [6] is the largest species group within Plethodon, with around 30 species and several subordinate species complexes. Many species within this group (including the nominal species ) are commonly known as " slimy salamanders ", characterized by a large size, robust build and black-and-white coloration.
The white-spotted slimy salamander (Plethodon cylindraceus) is similar in size and color, but differs in many other respects. Plethodon punctatus can differentiated by its more slender build, slightly webbed toes, protuberant eyes, a higher number of costal grooves (usually 17–18), and a lighter throat. [4]
