Dirt track racing is the single most common form of auto racing in the United States. According to the National Speedway Directory, there are over 700 dirt oval tracks in operation in the US. After hosting dirt track races in the 1950s and early 1960s, the course was paved in 1962. At the time the track was just over 1 mile (2 km) in length. In 1968, the track hosted its first 24 hour race, the 24 Hours of Nelson Ledges. At the time it was the only continuous 24-hour motorcycle race in the United States. [3]
