Global Environment Outlook (GEO) is a series of reports that review the state and direction of the global environment, issued periodically by the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP). The GEO project is a response to the environmental reporting requirements of UN Agenda 21 and to a UNEP Governing Council decision of May 1995.
The Report is a collaborative effort by 145 authors from 50 countries, [8] produced over a three-year period and supported by some 310 authors' contributions. [9] The Global Assessment Report comprises some 1,700 pages [8] evaluating over 15,000 scientific publications and reports from indigenous peoples. [10]
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is responsible for coordinating responses to environmental issues within the United Nations system. [ 1 ] [ 2 ] It was established by Maurice Strong , its first director, after the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment in Stockholm in June 1972.
