A hale (pronounced HAH-lay) [1] is a structure built using natural Hawaiian materials and designs that were prevalent during the 19th century in Hawaii. The site was selected because of the king's strong ties to the island of Maui. Two of his wives were from districts on the island, Kaʻahumanu and Keōpūolani. [12] Kamehameha I was highly interested in western-style buildings. [8] Prior to 1795 there were several shipwrecked foreigners on Oahu.
The current Wailuku Library was built in 1928 to replace another building on the same site used by the Maui County Free Library, which was created by the Maui Women's Club in 1919 as the first Library on Maui. [12] Designed by Hawaii-based architect C.W. Dickey, the building incorporates both Mediterranean Revival & Hawaiian architecture cues.
