Most children took the eleven-plus in their final year of primary school: usually at age 10 or 11. In Berkshire and Buckinghamshire it was also possible to sit the test a year early – a process named the ten-plus; later, the Buckinghamshire test was called the twelve-plus and taken a year later than usual.
In some areas of England, Year 6 is a year group in Middle school, which covers the year 5–8 or 4–7-year groups. In some parts of England, where there remain separate Grammar and Secondary modern schools, students in Year 6 may sit a test for entrance into a Grammar school. The test is known colloquially as the Eleven plus exam.
The test consists of two sections: Language Use and Listening. [6] Test levels 9-14 are administered to students from third grade through twelfth grade. Like test levels 5–8, the primary purpose of levels 9-14 is instructional development. School districts use the standardized achievement battery to learn supplementary information useful in choosing curriculum and lesson planning.
