The county of Oxfordshire in England is broadly situated in the land between the River Thames to the south, the Cotswolds to the west, the Chilterns to the east and The Midlands to the north, with spurs running south to Henley-on-Thames and north to Banbury.
1889–1890 – Oxford county borough acquires sites for Wolvercote Cemetery, Rose Hill cemetery and Botley Cemetery, outside the city boundary at this time; they are dedicated in 1894 under the Interments Act [192] (including on 1 April 1894 dedication of a Jewish burial ground at Wolvercote Cemetery).
The county is largely rural, with an area of 2,605 km 2 (1,006 sq mi) and a population of 691,667. After Oxford (162,100), the largest settlements are Banbury (54,355) and Abingdon-on-Thames (37,931). For local government purposes Oxfordshire is a non-metropolitan county with five districts.
