  2. Why do we assume good and evil exist? - Philosophy Stack Exchange

    philosophy.stackexchange.com/questions/43759/why-do-we...

The definition of good and evil is "morally right" and "morally wrong", respectively. The distinction between moral truths vs normal truths has always been there, our society has just muddied the line between the two. Most people don't know that the word good means anything more than right, which is too bad. – CyberGenesis.

  3. Is it possible to scientifically determine good and evil?

    philosophy.stackexchange.com/questions/357/is-it-possible...

What really is good and evil (long answer with logical explanation) If you define "evil" as being wicked, then this is not possible, as what constitutes being wicked is purely a matter of opinion.

    philosophy.stackexchange.com/questions/1416

So when you ask "Are there any non-divine objective standards of good/evil?", the answer is a resounding Yes, there are non-divine standards of good and evil; in fact—as I try to highlight in the second section—it is difficult to suggest that there are any sources of morality other than the "non-divine" standard (holy books, deities, etc).

    2. Absolute good - positive effect. Absolute evil - negative effect. Unfortunately, we do not live in a world of absolutes. Study some religions, they are basically training manuals for how to be "good". (I am sure some are not, that statement is not absolute.) Share.

  7. Without good and evil, are we left with mediocrity only?

    philosophy.stackexchange.com/questions/104819/without-good...

Also, while good can be in opposition to evil, it can be applied to so many things completely off that axis- a good film, a good book, a good view, a good job, etc- so it seems to me that even in a world of moral neutrality, there would still be all the other contrasts and scope for excellence, so I can't see how mediocrity would necessarily ...

  8. Is good the absence of evil or is it the other way round?

    philosophy.stackexchange.com/questions/46151/is-good-the...

The answer to your question is yes. In the "vacuum of space", for example, there is an absence of evil, but that doesn't make it good, and there's an absence of good, but that doesn't make it evil. I think you have to allow for the null case. Is hate the opposite of love? No; indifference is the opposite of love.

    philosophy.stackexchange.com/questions/38552/are-people...

5 Are people inherently good according to Plato? This may be a delicate question. On the one hand, Plato's Socrates asserts, in the Phaedo, concerning the misanthropist (hater of people), that only few people are genuinely good or evil.

  11. How do Buddhism, Hinduism, etc. address the 'problem of evil'?

    philosophy.stackexchange.com/questions/5977

One of the arguments against the existence of god is the problem of evil and specifically, the death of innocent children. I'm curious to know if the concepts of reincarnation and a karmic carry-over from past lives are how Buddhism, Hinduism, and other Eastern philosophies which employ these concepts, address this specific problem.
