The league was formed in 2014 following the merger of the Midland Alliance and Midland Combination.. Successful Premier Division clubs can win promotion to the 8th level of the English football league system, while the competition also has a number of feeder leagues at level 11, which provide new member clubs each year.
Founded in 1889, only one year after the Football League, the Midland League was the second league for professional clubs to be formed. Eleven clubs participated in the first season, 1889–90, four of whom (including the first champions, Lincoln City) would go on to achieve Football League status. The eleven founder members came from six counties.

They won the Midland League title for four consecutive seasons, from 1911–12 to 1914–15 inclusive. [ 3 ] After the War, they were elected to the Football League when the league expanded from 40 clubs to 44 in 1919.

In 1946–47 they won the Rugeley & District League. After winning the league again the following season, they moved on to the Cannock Chase League. The club were champions of the new league in 1954–55, before going on to win the title again in 1954–55, 1956–57, 1957–58, 1960–61, 1973–74 and 1977–78. [1]
