Holy Family Church is situated in Franklinton, the oldest neighborhood in Columbus. The Catholic population of the early 1850s consisted of only a few families, augmented for a short time by a small number of laborers who were constructing the National Road. Before 1833 Mass was celebrated occasionally in the homes of the few Catholic families.
The church reopened for worship on April 19, 2019, for the Palm Sunday Vigil Mass. [11] Following these renovations, the church was chosen as the best religious wedding venue in the city of Columbus by the readers of Columbus Monthly in 2022. [12] It also served as a performance venue for Central Ohio chamber orchestra ProMusica Columbus. [13]
This influx of migrants eventually split off to form Saint Patrick Church, though they continued to share Holy Cross while the new church was being built. [8] A fire in June 1877 burned most of the high altar and caused $20,000 of damage. Following repairs, bishop Augustus Toebbe of the Diocese of Covington rededicated the church in 1880. [7]

The cathedral c. 1900-10. St. Joseph Parish, named after Saint Joseph, was founded by members of St. Patrick's Parish in Columbus in 1866 to alleviate overcrowding. Its pastor, the Rev. Edward M. Fitzgerald, began to plan for the church, raised money, formed a building committee and secured property on Broad Street and Fifth for $13,500. [1]
Upon the completion of the new church in 1923, Mass was transferred from the old church and the now-vacant was turned into school rooms. The school was remodeled to serve as classrooms for the grammar and commercial school. This building was demolished in 1957. [5] St. Charles Seminary had its start at Sacred Heart.
