Dayton was founded in the 1860s. A town site plat was filed by Jesse N. and Elizabeth Day on November 23, 1871. The city was officially incorporated on November 10, 1881, and was named for Jesse Day. [4] Dayton has the oldest train depot in Washington state, dating from 1881, and the oldest continuously used courthouse, operating since 1887.

Dayton Mercantile, is a historic building situated at 408 Main St. in Dayton in Sheridan County, Wyoming. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2016. [1] It is a two-story wood-frame building built as a commercial general store in 1882 by Henry Baker, and enlarged to the rear in 1901 by Henry Croghan.

Dayton's has roots in R.S. Goodfellow & Company, a dry goods business founded as Goodfellow and Eastman in 1878. [5] George Draper Dayton constructed a six-story building at Nicollet Avenue and Seventh Street in 1902 and convinced Goodfellow's, then the fourth-largest department store in Minneapolis, [6] to become the tenant.
