The Indian Society for Technical Education is a national, professional, non-profit Society registered under the Indian Societies Registration Act of 1860. First started in 1941 as the Association of Principals of Technical Institutions (APTI), it was converted into "Indian Society for Technical Education" in 1968 with a view to enlarge its activities to advance the cause of Technology education.

The 2017 ISTE Standards for Teachers, renamed the ISTE Standards for Educators, were released in June 2017. In 2007, ISTE refreshed the student standards and released them as the “ISTE Standards for Students” to reflect the increasing global reach brought about by technology. Instead of focusing on learning how to use technology, the 2007 ISTE Standards for Students emphasized how the effective integration of technology impacts learning.
