John Allyn McAlpin Berryman (born John Allyn Smith, Jr.; October 25, 1914 – January 7, 1972) was an American poet and scholar. He was a major figure in American poetry in the second half of the 20th century and is considered a key figure in the " confessional " school of poetry.
According to Crane biographer John Berryman Crane began writing Flowers of Asphalt after being approached by a young male prostitute in the street. [1] The work was said to be longer than any of Crane's other works but he abandoned it at the urging of Hamlin Garland, who was horrified by the subject matter. The manuscript does not survive. [2] 1908
