[1] Established in 1951, it houses an exhibition centered on Yunnan 's ethnic minorities, as well as a collection of artifacts from tomb excavations at Jinning on the southern rim of Lake Dian .

Opened on 9 November 1995, [1] it is a comprehensive ethnology museum. Covering an area of over 200 mu, the museum has a building area of 130,000 square metres (1,400,000 sq ft). It consists of various exhibition halls, office building, report hall, storage and workshops.
In 2005, the museum received part of a $20 million grant from the Carnegie Corporation, made possible through a donation by then-New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg. [6] [7] The museum moved to a new site at 215 Centre Street in 2009. [8] The space was designed by architect Maya Lin and was six times as large as the old site.
