The length should conform to readers' expectations of a short, but useful and complete, summary of the topic. Few well-written leads will be shorter than about 100 words. The leads in most featured articles contain about 250 to 400 words. Lead sections that reflect or expand on sections in other articles are discussed at Summary style.
What matters is that articles should be well-written and be consistent with the core content policies – Neutral point of view, No original research, and Verifiability. The guideline does not apply to quotations, which should be faithfully reproduced from the original sources (see Wikipedia:Manual of Style § Quotations).
Well-written, clear, well referenced Coverage is the main criterion in assessing Stub, Start and C class articles, but truly awful prose or severe technical issues can drag a rating down to Stub. With B and GA/A/FA, where coverage is mostly complete, quality of prose and technical style are more important.
Involves original writing but not original research; a Wikipedia article generally is the written work of its users. It will not violate another's copyright or plagiarize another's work, but its summary of information must still be completely reliably sourced. In addition, all quotes are marked with quotation marks and cited.
