Shelby Charter Township, officially the Charter Township of Shelby, is a charter township located in Macomb County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The township is an affluent northern suburb of Detroit. As of the 2020 census, the population was 79,408, [2] up from 73,804 in 2010.
It is now owned by the Friends of the Loren Andrus Octagon House, Inc., which bought it in 1987. [2] In the 1990s and early 2000s most of the land the Octagon house once sat on was sold and converted into single-family residential homes and a shopping center. A move under the township’s controversial zoning and rationalization plan (1993).
As of the census [1] of 2000, there were 3,951 people, 1,388 households, and 1,059 families residing in the township. The population density was 109.8 per square mile (42.4/km 2 ). There were 1,502 housing units at an average density of 41.7 per square mile (16.1/km 2 ).
District 8, as dictated by the 2011 Apportionment Plan, was based in northern and coastal Macomb County to the north of Detroit, including the communities of St. Clair Shores, Harrison Township, Mount Clemens, Chesterfield Township, New Baltimore, Lenox Township, New Haven, Ray Township, Utica, Shelby Township, Washington Township, Romeo, and Bruce Township.
Washington Township is in northwestern Macomb County and is bordered to the west by Oakland County. The village of Romeo is partially in the northeast part of the township. Ray Township is to the east, Shelby Township is to the south, and Bruce Township is to the north. Washington Township is 28 to 34 miles (45 to 55 km) north of downtown Detroit.
